What is niacinamide and how does it help fight skin blemishes?

Posted by Gina Russell on

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 which is an essential nutrient for different functions of the body such as brain function, digestion or nervous system. Likewise, it is applied in the prevention and treatment of various skin disorders (atopic dermatitis, acne or hyperpigmentation, among others). It is found in plant roots, yeasts and a large number of foods such as milk, eggs or meat, among others.

Niacinamide strengthens the skin's repair processes and reduces cell damage caused by UVB rays.

Niacinamide benefits

Although not as well known as retinol or vitamin C, niacinamide is a great ally for skin health. It is soluble in water and alcohol and has a low molecular weight, acting in the deepest layers of the skin. In addition, it has good tolerability. Therefore, all skin types can benefit from its effects, from relieving inflammation to controlling sebum (skin oil) production.

Heliocare - About Niacinamide

Among the benefits of niacinamide are:

Antioxidant power

It is very effective in fighting oxidative stress. Its action prevents the signs of premature aging as it regenerates collagen and elastin , improving the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Depigmenting action

It helps to unify the skin tone due to its ability to reduce the transfer of melanosomes , responsible for the synthesis of melanin, preventing them from accumulating in keratinocytes (cells of the epidermis). In this way, it prevents the appearance of skin blemishes and acts on the first signs of aging.

Regeneration of the skin barrier

The niacinamide gets improved and compact the skin outer layer which is the first line of defense of the skin. Its action stimulates the production of new ceramides , lipids found in the skin and which are essential to guarantee the skin's barrier function and maintain its hydration . In this way, you can more effectively defend yourself against contamination and prevent its particles from penetrating the deep layers of the skin and triggering inflammatory processes.

Protection against photoaging

The niacinamide strengthens the repair processes of the skin and reduces cell damage caused by UVB rays in the epidermis and in particular in keratinocytes (cells that form the skin barrier ). Likewise, it minimizes the damage produced by the generation of free radicals or unstable molecules due to solar action and pollution . In addition, its action reinforces the energy needed by the enzymes in charge of repairing DNA cells that have been damaged.
